Tradition combines with comfort and modern conveniences. Located on the shores of Tirol's largest lake and surrounded by mighty mountains, Pertisau makes a fine base for walking and hiking in the Alpenpark Karwendel nature park. The Karwendel Bergbahn gondola is the effortless way up the mountain, and those who prefer some more activity and challenge are offered numerous trails and routes for walking and mountain biking.
Emperor Maximilian loved to go hunting in Pertisau. Members of the aristocracy and artists found their inspiration here. Walking towards the charming village center or along the lakeshore you will come across Austria's first golf course, which is probably the most beautiful of its kind in Tirol.
The Achensee boats stop at Pertisau; since 1887, the steam boats connect Achenkirch, Maurach, and Pertisau. The colorful sails of surfers and sailing boats create a special atmosphere, and there are many other possibilities for sports enthusiasts: fishing, tennis, running, and Nordic Walking are all included in the "activity program" of this marvelous holiday village.
There are numerous hotels with spa facilities all along the lake, which is largely due to the fact that the region is home to a shale oil processing business and a related museum and shop ("Steinöl Vitalberg"). Tirolean shale oil is said to have healing properties and is used in beauty and care products.
The assets of the largest lake in Tirol and the unique mountain world unite in Pertisau. Therefore it's one of the best starting points for hikes in winter and an access point to the cross-country trails in Tirol's largest nature park - Alpenpark Karwendel. The Karwendel Bergbahn lift takes skiers and sun worshippers up the mountain to the ski area Zwölferkopf where snow is guaranteed. The area boasts special offers for families and late sleepers.
Cross-country skiers are delighted by the unique nature and by the snow-covered trails which allow them to glide through the winter wonderland. Snow-making facilties are near the trails so it doesn't matter when Mother Hulda takes a day off.
If you stroll around the snow-covered village you will find quite a few links to the past, e. g. old hotels which tell many stories about past times.
That there are so many wellness hotel situated in Pertisau is maybe due to a special product only available at lake Achensee - the Tirolean mineral oil (Tiroler Steinöl). It's a healing natural product, which is extracted from oil shale in the Karwendelgebirge mountain range near lake Achensee. The company Steinöl Vitalberg has founded a special museum dedicated to this oil in Pertisau.
